What Is Fat Dissolving Injection Treatment?
Fat dissolving injections are a non-surgical cosmetic treatment designed to permanently destroy small, stubborn pockets of fat that resist diet and exercise. The treatment involves injecting a specially formulated solution, most commonly containing deoxycholic acid, directly into the targeted fat deposit, where it breaks down the fat cell membranes, causing the cells to release their contents and be naturally eliminated by the body over the following weeks.
In Ireland, fat dissolving injections have become a popular non-surgical option for small, localised fat deposits, most commonly the "double chin" (submental fat) that affects both men and women and can be resistant to diet and exercise. The treatment is also used for small fat deposits on the jowls, and some practitioners offer off-label treatment for other localised areas of the body. For small, targeted areas like the submental region, fat dissolving injections can approximate the results of liposuction; for larger volumes or broader body areas. They are not a true alternative to liposuction, which removes larger volumes more efficiently.
Product landscape in Ireland, important context. Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is FDA-approved in the United States for submental fat reduction but is not currently available in Ireland or the EU. Belkyra, the European brand of deoxycholic acid, was discontinued in Europe in 2019–2020 due to commercial performance and is no longer on the market. The most commonly used product in Ireland today is Aqualyx, which contains sodium deoxycholate combined with other components in a solution designed for subcutaneous injection, and is CE-marked.
Important: since Belkyra was discontinued in Europe. Some clinics have turned to compounded or imported deoxycholic acid preparations with varying regulatory status. Always ask what specific product your practitioner is using and ensure it is CE-marked or has appropriate regulatory approval in Ireland and the EU. Be aware that products marketed as "fat dissolvers" also vary in composition, some contain only phosphatidylcholine, hypertonic saline, or other ingredients with less robust evidence than deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a bile acid that occurs naturally in the human body and plays a role in the breakdown of dietary fat, and it has the strongest evidence base among the injectable fat-dissolving products.
It is important to understand that fat dissolving injections are designed for targeted reduction of small, localised fat deposits. They are not a weight loss treatment, and they are not an alternative to a healthy lifestyle. Ideal candidates are at or near their goal weight, have maintained a stable weight for at least 3 to 6 months before treatment, and are committed to weight stability afterwards. Significant weight fluctuations during or after the treatment course can affect results.
The treatment is genuinely permanent in that the destroyed fat cells do not regenerate. Once they are gone. They are gone for good, provided you maintain a stable weight. Each session typically produces visible but modest reduction, and most patients see meaningful improvement after a full course of 2 to 4 sessions. This makes fat dissolving injections unique among non-surgical aesthetic treatments, most of which require ongoing maintenance.
How Does Fat Dissolving Injection Treatment Work?
Fat dissolving injections work through a process called adipocytolysis, the chemical destruction of fat cells (adipocytes). Here is the step-by-step process:
-
Consultation and assessment, Your practitioner assesses the targeted area, evaluating the amount and distribution of subcutaneous fat, the quality and elasticity of the overlying skin, and your overall suitability for the treatment. They will also rule out other causes for the concern, for example, a "double chin" appearance can sometimes be caused by a recessed chin or a low hyoid bone rather than excess fat.
-
Marking and preparation, The treatment area is cleaned and marked with a grid pattern to ensure even distribution of the injections. Ice or topical numbing cream may be applied to reduce discomfort, and some practitioners inject a small amount of local anaesthetic.
-
Injection, Using a fine needle, your practitioner injects the fat dissolving solution into the subcutaneous fat layer at multiple points across the marked grid. For a submental treatment, this typically involves 20 to 40 small injections. The depth and spacing of the injections are carefully controlled to ensure the solution reaches the fat layer while avoiding deeper structures.
-
Cellular breakdown, The deoxycholic acid disrupts the cell membrane of the fat cells it contacts. This causes the fat cells to rupture, releasing their lipid (fat) contents into the surrounding tissue.
-
Inflammatory response, The body mounts a natural inflammatory response to clear the destroyed cells and released lipids. This inflammatory process is responsible for the significant swelling, tenderness, and firmness that patients experience in the days following treatment. These are signs that the treatment is working.
-
Natural elimination, Over the following 4 to 12 weeks, the body's lymphatic and metabolic systems gradually process and eliminate the destroyed fat cells and their contents. The treated area becomes progressively slimmer.
Each session takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Most patients require 2 to 4 sessions, spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart, to achieve their desired result. The number of sessions depends on the volume of fat present and the individual's response to treatment.
